Extreme poverty is what President Joko Widodo has highlighted most often. Jokowi targets that by 2024, there will be no more extreme poor people in all regions of the country. Through Presidential Instruction Number 4 of 2022, there are three government steps to eliminate extreme poverty, namely by reducing the burden of public expenditure, increasing people's income, and reducing the number of pockets of poverty.
What is Extreme Poverty?
According to the National Team for the Acceleration of Poverty Reduction (TNP2K), extreme poverty is defined as a condition. Where, community welfare is below the extreme poverty line which is equivalent to USD 1.9 PPP (purchasing power parity). PPP itself is a monetary unit used to compare prices of goods and services between countries on a standard basis.
Extreme Poverty Conditions in Full River
According to the Head of BPS for Sungai Penuh City, Kuswan Gunanto, the extreme poor population in Sungai Penuh City in 2022 is 0.15 percent. This percentage decreased compared to 2021 which was 0.96 percent. In other words, Full River City is a bit more free from extreme poverty.
The extreme poverty rate is the lowest in Jambi Province.
Kuswan said that the poverty rate was derived from data from the National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas) for Consumption and Expenditure in March 2021 and March 2022. This figure is the result of calculating PPP (Purchasing Power Parity) per capita expenditure adjustments. Meanwhile, the calculation of the GKE (Extreme Poverty Line) is the result of multiplying the ratio of the average expenditure with the National GKE.
Extreme Poverty Policy
The first thing that should be prioritized for eradicating extreme poverty is maintaining the inflation rate. Inflation, or an increase in the prices of goods and services, will automatically increase public spending, especially spending on food. Those who are extremely poor must be very vulnerable to price fluctuations. One way to control inflation is to facilitate the flow of goods distribution. In a food crisis situation like now, Sungai Penuh City is still lucky because the food supply is relatively abundant. By observing the available macro and micro poverty data, the government is expected to be able to formulate accurate policies in alleviating extreme poverty in Sungai Penuh City.
