Commuter workers are those of working age who work across the district/city boundaries where they live and return to their place of residence in less than 24 hours.
This commuter worker (roundtrip) will increase along with the development between regions that is getting bigger.
According to Abler, Adam and Gould (1972), the shuttle is essentially an interaction between one area and another that arises as a result of the following:
- There is demand (demand) in one area and supply (supply) in other areas.
- There are no other sources or intervening opportunities between the interacting regions, thus distorting the interaction between the two regions.
- There is the possibility to carry out internal movements with the ability of facilities and infrastructure that support the interaction between the two regions.
Some literature shows that the pattern of mobility of men and women is different.
Women tend to commute on short distances.
In addition, women prefer to choose part-time jobs, seasonal jobs, or jobs with high turnover rates.
Women's dual roles, namely as mothers or domestic workers, make travel distances.
Workers who do similar repeats have similar patterns in some areas.
When viewed from the level of education, shuttle mobility is mostly carried out by those with high school education and above, when viewed by age group, shuttle mobility is mostly carried out by those aged 30 to 55 years (Sahara, 2010).
According to IB's mantra, in his article entitled Population Mobility Patterns from Villages to Cities, Presented in a Seminar on Urbanization and Labor Problems, which was organized by YTKI FES-Directorate General of Bina Guna with the Demographic Institute, Faculty of Economics UI, on 27 October 1978, They who work across district/city boundaries, generally due to the absence of work in the area where they live, and/or because there are better job options than those in their area.
In addition, they generally do not want to be separated by being separated for a long period of time.
In terms of non-permanent mobility, the percentage of commuter workers who experienced an increase in the period 2016-2019 while in 2020 decreased.
This is most likely an impact of the workload during the pandemic.
In Jambi Province, we meet many commuter workers. The results of the analysis of Sakernas data in August 2020, Commuter Workers in Indonesia opened 7,014,582 people. Jambi Province shows the number of commuter workers of 46,769 people, consisting of 37,156 men and 9,613 women. (Jambi data/)
