In this era of industry 4.0, many changes occur in the order of people's lives. The ease of accessing the internet and the things of digitalization have changed people's lifestyles, from conventional to more modern.
Some examples of this change are the use of online motorcycle taxis, online food purchases, and online shopping. In addition, with the Covid-19 pandemic, people's lives are increasingly dependent on the convenience of technology. Internet consumption continues to increase during the Covid-19 pandemic even though the economy is in recession. This is due to the demands of the online world of education and the world of work. In fact, for entertainment, it is also one of the factors for internet consumption in times that test these psychological conditions. With the increasing contribution of the digital aspect to the economy, it has facilitated, accelerated and changed the pattern of supply and demand of economic actors from various sides, such as marketing, purchasing, product distribution, payment systems, and so on. The development of buying and selling goods and or services based on electronic networks or what is called Electronic Commerce (E-Commerce) has high potential in the economy. To that end, the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) conducted the 2022 E-Commerce Survey as a follow-up to the First National Priority Program, “Strengthening Economic Resilience for Quality and Equitable Growth”. This data collection is the 4th time data collection after 2019, 2020, and 2021. The results of this data collection are expected to be an indicator to see the profile picture of E-Commerce from the point of view of business actors. The 2022 E-Commerce Survey data collection was carried out by registering all businesses/companies (listing) in 1,581 selected census blocks in 159 districts/cities spread over 34 provinces, then interviewing 15,677 businesses that were the selected sample. From a number of selected census blocks, there are 35 selected census blocks spread over 4 districts/cities of Jambi Province, namely Merangin, Tanjung Jabung Timur, Tebo, and Jambi City, with a total sample of 307 businesses. Currently, business registration has been carried out and business samples are being taken. The businesses selected as samples will be interviewed this August. Based on the results of the 2021 E-Commerce Survey data collection, of all businesses recorded in the selected census block in Jambi Province, there were 23.20 percent of businesses that carried out E-Commerce activities until the end of December 31, 2020 and 23.98 percent of businesses that carried out E-Commerce activities until the end of 30 June 2021. This shows that businesses in Jambi Province are still dominated by conventional types of business.
From this survey, it is estimated that there are around 20,215 E-Commerce businesses (0.86 percent) spread across Jambi Province from 2,361,423 E-Commerce businesses in Indonesia in 2020. It can be said that the number of E-Commerce businesses in Jambi Province is still very low. Of all businesses in Jambi Province that do not carry out E-Commerce activities in 2020, the most reason for businesses not carrying out E-Commerce activities is that they feel more comfortable selling directly (offline), which is 75.26%.
The results of the data collection show that E-Commerce business actors in Jambi Province are non-formal E-Commerce businesses, with the following characteristics:
- The majority use instant messaging and social media as a sales medium;
- The majority of education in the person in charge/business owner is Senior High School and below;
- The total revenue value and the value of E-Commerce revenue is below 300 million rupiah;
- The majority of businesses do not have financial statements;
- The most frequently used payment method is Cash on Delivery (COD) or payment in cash;
- Direct delivery as the most used shipping method;
- The area for delivery of goods is still in Jambi Province.
With the phenomena captured from the data collection, the Jambi provincial government can formulate policies to stimulate the growth of E-Commerce activities that focus on non-formal businesses.
However, the Jambi Provincial government can use an updated portrait of the condition of E-Commerce activities after the entire series of data collection activities for the 2022 E-Commerce Survey has been completed and updated data is obtained which will be released in December.
