The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) of Jambi Province was invited to be a resource person at the 2022 Food Consumption Analysis Meeting at the Jambi Province Level. This activity was organized by the Jambi Province Food Security Service on Wednesday (24/8).
The event was also attended by the Central BKP Team, District/City Food Security Services throughout the Jambi Province, and Regency/City BPS-Statistics of Jambi Province. This event was held to improve the capacity of the apparatus' resources in processing data, the practice of consumption analysis applications, as well as planning for food consumption needs as the basis for determining the Jambi Province's Food Security policy.
A resource person from the Jambi Province BPS conveyed an explanation related to the portrait of Jambi Province's food consumption in 2021.
Based on the average monthly expenditure per capita, it can be seen that the expenditure of the population of Jambi Province is concentrated in the expenditure group of IDR 500,000 to IDR 1,499,999 per capita per month.
With 4 household members per household, most Jambi Province households spend between IDR 2,000,000 to IDR 6,000,000 per month. Based on the composition of expenditure, the share of food expenditure is slightly larger than the share of non-food expenditure (52.00 percent compared to 48.00 percent). Also in 2021, the share value of food expenditure shows a decrease compared to the previous year where the share of food expenditure was 52.38 percent.
This decline in food expenditure supports improved food security conditions. The food commodity with the largest expenditure in Jambi Province is prepared food and beverages (13.56 percent).
This means that 13.56 percent of the monthly expenditure of Jambi Province residents is spent on buying ready-made food and beverages.
The next largest share of expenditure is cigarettes and tobacco (6.99 percent), grains (6.08 percent), vegetables (5.92 percent), and fish/shrimp/squid/shellfish (5.17 percent).
Furthermore, when viewed from the level of consumption of several foodstuffs, the average consumption of rice per capita reaches 6.51 kg a month.
Consumption of chicken eggs per capita per capita reaches 9 eggs a month.
Meanwhile, red chili consumption per capita is 0.48 kg a month and cooking oil/coconut consumption per capita is 1.34 liters a month. The average calorie consumption per capita of the population of Jambi Province in 2021 reached 2,140.54 kcal a day and protein consumption per capita reached 60.01 grams a day.
The consumption of calories and protein in 2021 will increase compared to 2020. The Nutrition Adequacy Rate (AKG) according to the Regulation of the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia Number 28 of 2019 states that the daily consumption of calories is higher at 2,100 kcal per person and the recommended daily protein consumption is 57 grams per person. . The daily consumption of calories and protein for the people of Jambi Province has met the recommended AKG.
Most of Jambi's calorie consumption comes from grains (832.47 kcal), oil and coconut (353.47 kcal), and prepared food and beverages (394.87 kcal).
Meanwhile, the highest protein consumption of the population of Jambi Province was obtained from grains (19.63 grams) and prepared foods and beverages (11.48 grams). In this meeting, BPS also presented an analysis of household food security based on data from the 2021 National Socio-Economic Survey (Susenas).
The criteria for food security use the concept of Maxwell and Frankenberger (1992) where food security is measured by a cross-classification indicator between the share of food expenditure and the fulfillment of calorie consumption.
The share of food expenditure measures food security from the economic aspect, while the fulfillment of calorie consumption measures food security from the nutritional aspect.
Based on the concept of food security, households are divided into 4 categories, namely:
(1) food security: sufficient calorie consumption (> 80 percent of RDA) and low food share (<60>
(2) food insecurity: sufficient calorie consumption (> 80 percent of the RDA) but high food share (≥60 percent);
(3) lack of food: low share of food (<60>
(4) food insecurity: high share of food (≥60 percent) and low calorie consumption (≤80 percent of RDA).
Based on this concept, there are 7.24 percent of households in Jambi Province that are classified as food insecure.
