Abstract

The number of poor (people with per capita spending per month below the Poverty Line) in Jambi Province in September 2017 reached 278.61 thousand people (7.90 percent), decreased by 7.94 thousand people compared with the poor in March 2017 which amounted to 286.55 thousand people (8.19 percent).
  • During the period from March to September 2017, the number of poor people in urban areas decreased by 2.13 thousand (from 120.62 thousand in March 2017 to 118.49 thousand in September 2017), while in rural areas 5,81 thousand (from 165.93 thousand people in March 2017 to 160.11 thousand people in September 2017).
  • During the period of March-September 2017, the percentage of poor people in urban and rural areas decreased. The percentage of the urban poor in March 2017 was 10.94 percent, down to 10.53 percent in September 2017. While the rural poor also fell from 6.92 percent in March 2017 to 6.66 percent in September 2017.
  • The role of food commodities against the Poverty Line is much greater than the role of non-food commodities (housing, clothing, education, and health) for both urban and rural areas. The contribution of the Food Poverty Line to the Urban Poverty Line in September 2017 was 73.43 percent, while in the villages it was much higher that reached 79.68 percent.
  • Food commodities that have great influence on the value of urban poverty line are relatively the same as in rural areas, including rice, filter clove cigarettes, beef, sugar, chicken eggs, chicken meat and red pepper. Meanwhile, for non-food commodities such as the cost of housing, gasoline, electricity, education, toiletries and women's apparel mature.
  • In the period from March to September 2017, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and Poverty Severity Index (P2) showed a decline. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor tends to be closer to the Poverty Line and the inequality in the expenditure of the poor also diminishes.
