Abstract

  • The number of poor (people with per capita spending per month below the Poverty Line) in Jambi Province in March 2017 reached 286.55 thousand people (8.19 percent), decreased by 4.26 thousand people compared with the poor in September 2016 Which amounted to 290.81 thousand people (8.37 percent).
  • During the period of September 2016-March 2017, the number of poor people in urban areas increased by 4.29 thousand (from 116.33 thousand people in September 2016 to 120.62 thousand people in March 2017), while in rural areas decreased 8.55 thousand (From 174.48 thousand people in September 2016 to 165.93 thousand in March 2017).
  • During the period of September 2016-March 2017, the percentage of poor people in urban areas increased, while in rural areas decreased. The percentage of the urban poor in September 2016 was 10.73 percent, rising to 10.94 percent in March 2017. While the poor in rural areas dropped from 7.30 percent in September 2016 to 6.92 percent in March 2017.
  • The role of food commodities against the Poverty Line is much greater than the role of non-food commodities (housing, clothing, education, and health) for both urban and rural areas. The contribution of the Food Poverty Line to the Urban Poverty Line in March 2017 was 73.47 percent, while in the villages it was much higher that reached 79.85 percent.
  • Food commodities that affect the value of urban Poverty Line are relatively the same as in rural areas, including rice, filter clove cigarettes, chicken meat, eggs, red chili, sugar, and instant noodles. Meanwhile, for non-food commodities such as the cost of housing, gasoline, electricity, education, adult women's apparel, and adult men's apparel.
  • In the period September 2016-March 2017, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and Poverty Severity Index (P2) showed a decline. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor tends to be closer to the Poverty Line and the inequality in the expenditure of the poor also diminishes.
