Abstract

  • The number of poor people (population with per capita expenditure per month below the Poverty Line) in Jambi Province in March 2019 reached 274.32 thousand people (7.60 percent), decreasing by 7.2 thousand people compared to the poor population in September 2018 which amounted to 281.47 thousand people (7.85 percent).
  • The percentage of poor people in urban areas in September 2018 was 10.08 percent, down to 9.81 percent in March 2019. While the percentage of poor people in rural areas in September 2018 was 6.80 percent, down to 6.53 percent in March 2019.
  • During the period September 2018-March 2019, the number of poor people in urban areas decreased by 1.4 thousand people from 116.50 thousand people in September 2018 to 115.08 thousand people in March 2019, while in rural areas it fell by 5.7 thousand people namely from 164.97 thousand people in September 2018 to 159.24 thousand people in March 2019.
  • The role of food commodities on the poverty line is far greater than the role of non-food commodities (housing, clothing, education, and health) for both urban and rural areas. The contribution of the Food Poverty Line to the Poverty Line in urban areas in March 2019 was recorded at 74.20 percent, while in rural areas it was much higher which reached 78.12 percent.
  • Food commodities that have a large influence on the value of the poverty line in urban areas are relatively the same as in rural areas, including rice, filtered clove cigarettes, chicken meat, chicken eggs, granulated sugar, red chillies, wet cakes, instant noodles, and shallots. Whereas, for non-food commodities, among others are the costs of housing, gasoline, electricity, education, toiletries, and children's clothing.
  • In the period September 2018-March 2019, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and the Poverty Severity Index (P2) showed a decline. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor tends to be closer to the poverty line and the inequality of expenditure of the poor is also getting smaller.
