Abstract

  • The percentage of poor people in urban areas in March 2018 was 10.41 percent, down to 10.08 percent in September 2018. While the percentage of poor people in rural areas in March 2018 was 6.75 percent, up to 6.80 percent in September 2018.
  • During the period March-September 2018, the number of poor people in urban areas decreased by 2,116 people from 118.62 thousand people in March 2018 to 116.50 thousand people in September 2018, while in rural areas it increased by 1,896 people, from 163.07 thousand people in March 2018 to 164.97 thousand people in September 2018.
  • The role of food commodities on the poverty line is far greater than the role of non-food commodities (housing, clothing, education, and health) for both urban and rural areas. The contribution of the Food Poverty Line to the Poverty Line in urban areas in September 2018 was 73.76 percent, while in rural areas it was higher which reached 78.39 percent.
  • Food commodities that have a large influence on the value of the poverty line in urban areas are relatively the same as in rural areas, including rice, filtered clove cigarettes, chicken meat, chicken eggs, red chillies, granulated sugar, and wet cakes. Meanwhile, non-food commodities include housing, gasoline, electricity, education, toiletries, water, transportation, and children's clothing.
  • In the period March-September 2018, the Poverty Depth Index (P1) and Poverty Severity Index (P2) showed a decline. This indicates that the average expenditure of the poor tends to be closer to the poverty line and the inequality of expenditure of the poor is also getting smaller.
