Tebo Regency Stunting Consultation: Together Prevent Stunting

August 1, 2022 | Other Activities

Efforts to prevent stunting in Tebo Regency continue to be encouraged, on July 28 2022 holding a stunting convergence activity at the Tebo Regency level in the Bakeuda Tebo hall. The stunting prevalence in Tebo Regency in 2019 was 29.5 percent, and decreased to 26. 20 percent in 2021. This data is based on the Pocket Book of the results of the 2021 Indonesian Nutrition Status Study (SSGI). The target for stunting reduction in Tebo Regency is from 26.2 percent to 16 percent in 2024. Of course, to achieve this target, cooperation between the local government of Tebo Regency and the regional government of Jambi Province and the central government is needed. The Tebo Regency Government itself continues to make stunting prevention efforts involving village, sub-district and related agencies. Stunting is a condition of failure to thrive in children under five years old (infants under 5 years old) due to chronic malnutrition so that the child is too short for his age. Malnutrition occurs since the baby is in the womb in the early days after the baby is born. however, the stunting condition only appears after the baby is 2 years old. Stunting in children should be a concern because if it is not handled properly it can have a long-term impact on the child.

Stunting occurs due to several factors or multi-dimensional and not only because of the problem of malnutrition experienced by pregnant women and children under five.

Here are some causes of stunting:

Poor parenting practices, including the mother's lack of knowledge about health and nutrition during pregnancy and after birth.

Lack of maternal health services during pregnancy or health services after the mother gives birth

Lack of household access to nutritious food

Access to clean water and sanitation is not good.

Special Index for Handling Stunting (IKPS)

IKPS is an instrument to monitor and evaluate stunting reduction programs in Indonesia.

Dimensions and indicators in the IKPS there are dimensions of health, dimensions of nutrition, dimensions of housing, dimensions of food, dimensions of education and dimensions of social protection. IKPS itself is calculated using indicators generated from the National Socio-Economic Survey (SUSENAS). In 2020, Indonesia's IKPS was 67.3, up 1.2 points compared to 2019 which was only 66.1. Meanwhile, Jambi Province's IKPS in 2019 was 61.0 and in 2020 it was 61.90, an increase of 0.90 points.

The index of each of the dimensions that make up the 2020 National IKPS, the Health Dimension is 73.1, the nutrition dimension is 85.1, the housing dimension is 84.9, the food dimension is 88.8, the education dimension is 41.7 and the social protection dimension is 30.0. The Ministry of Health's basic health research in 2019 noted that there were 6.3 million children under five from a population of 23 million Indonesian children under five suffering from stunting. This number is still very unfortunate, considering that this is still far from the WHO standard value which should be below 20 percent.

Together prevent stunting

Stunting prevention efforts cannot be done alone and must be done together.

Stunting can occur due to many factors, therefore the handling must be comprehensive involving various sectors.

There are 23 ministries and institutions that are fighting together to tackle stunting in Indonesia. The target for 2024 can be reduced to 14 percent.

Cross-sectoral commitment and coordination and support from health professional organizations, community organizations, and every family are needed.

The presence of the state in preventing stunting aims for Indonesia to progress. Stunting prevention that can be done is as follows:

Nutritional needs since pregnancy must be met, adequate nutrition is relatively more effective to prevent stunting in children. Consumption of pregnant women should eat healthy and nutritious foods or take supplements as recommended by a doctor.

Exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months, breast milk is very good for children because of the micro and macro nutrients found in breast milk. Whey protein and colostrum present in breast milk can boost a child's immune system

Healthy complementary foods, when babies are 6 months old and above, are given nutritious complementary foods.

Monitoring the growth and development of children, as parents must monitor the growth and development of children, especially the weight and height of the child. Bringing to the posyandu on a regular basis is able to detect early stunting

Always maintain a clean environment, children under 5 years are very susceptible to disease, so a healthy environment will help the child's growth and development well.

The government itself through the National Population and Family Planning Agency (BKKBN) makes the ELSIMIL (Electronic Ready for Marriage and Pregnancy) application which functions as:

Screening tool to detect risk factors in Catin

Connecting catin with companion

Educational media about readiness for marriage and pregnancy, especially those related to stunting risk factors,

Catin compliance monitoring tool in carrying out treatment to prepare for a healthy pregnancy.

Stunting is a threat to human quality in Indonesia, especially in Tebo district, so let's together prevent stunting in children, in order to realize a Golden Indonesia.
